PROJECT INTRODUCTION/DECRIPTION
Baggins End Domes, located at UC Davis, is a unique on-campus cooperative community designed by Ron Swenson. Housing 26 UCD students in 14 polyurethane-insulated fiberglass domes, it is one of the few student co-housing cooperatives in the US. Established in 1972 for affordable housing, it embodies values of critical thought, inclusivity, and sustainability.
During a recent visit to the site, the wear and tear on the domes indicated the need for improved signage to enhance navigation for residents and visitors. Therefore, the sign system produced from this project embodies the DIY and community spirit that the Domes fosters amongst its residents. Colorful, organically shaped signage will help to reinforce Baggins' identity and promote the values it represents.

Site Evaluation/Existing Conditions
Site Evaluation/Existing Conditions
The charm of the Domes is its envelopment in nature. Trees, grass and other plants make up most of the site, providing a backdrop that makes the plentiful diy crafts pop out with their bright colors. There was a significant lack of informational signage and no clear official pathways that went around the site. The signs that did exist were hand painted promotional signs and then some regulatory signs and a decayed interpretive sign explaining their history.

Organic shapes and bold colors were the primary inspirations of the design palette. Existing forms like the Davis Compassion bench and the material and shape of the Domes themselves were also key in informing the process.

REFLECTION:
I thoroughly enjoyed this project as it provided a delightful opportunity to delve into the site and craft practical signage solutions. Venturing into the realm of signage design for the first time was eye-opening; I discovered the intricacies involved in creating effective outdoor signage, from material selection to considerations like sign height. Overall, this experience was both enjoyable and enlightening!
