PROJECT OVERVIEW

For my final project in DES 159: Design for Understanding, we were tasked to research and analyze a public interest design issue on the topic of accessibility and propose a solution.

Our objective was to address loneliness through an innovative solution—a versatile, interactive card game promoting teamwork and meaningful connections across diverse settings.

PROBLEM

Loneliness can occur even when someone is surrounded by a large number of people, leading to feelings of isolation and disconnection.

How might we help college students change their surface-level friendships to long-lasting, meaningful, and close friendships?

SOLUTION

Introducing GET²GETHER, an interactive card game designed to combat loneliness by fostering teamwork and facilitating meaningful conversations about values and thoughts. Accompanying our card game, is a website offering additional information on friendships.

Understanding With Competitive Analysis

Exploration Through Surveys

To begin collecting information, we distributed a Google Survey aimed at understanding the nature of friendships among college students and the difficulties they encounter when trying to establish new connections.

To begin collecting information, we distributed a Google Survey aimed at understanding the nature of friendships among college students and the difficulties they encounter when trying to establish new connections.

Survey Results:

  1. 21 respondents

  2. Most people have a lot of surface-level friends but only a few best/deep-leveled friendships

  3. 61.9% of people spend 11+ hours with friends per week

  4. 71.4% of people find it hard to make long-lasting friendships

  5. People meet friends the most through similar interests, school, and friends.

Empathizing in Interviews

To dig deeper into the pain points of college students, we chose three UC Davis undergraduates to interview. We found three important factors that helped students become closer with their friends:

“Friends support you and help people feel safe. It’s good for the mental health to feel supported, warm and safe, which builds self confidence and in general is good." - KIM NGOV, RN NURSE AT KAISER BEHAVIORAL HEALTH

To get a better understanding of what part we want to focus on, we made initial sketches for our website/app and also created questions for the different levels of our card game.

To get a better understanding of what part we want to focus on, we made initial sketches for our website/app and also created questions for the different levels of our card game.

After considering our sketches, we opted for a website to showcase resources and information, as it would offer improved user accessibility compared to an app. We also digitized our cards onto Figma, where we began designing their visual appearance.

User Testing

Through user testing with a surface-level group of friends, we observed that the questions featured in each level of our post-it note card game did start to create deep, meaningful connections with an organic buildup.

CHALLENGES:
During the development of GET²GETHER, we confronted challenges in comprehending the different friendship types and devising effective strategies to deepen these connections. Another significant challenge emerged during the card design process, as we navigated the intricacies of color reproduction and ensuring accurate representation of card sizes. Overcoming these hurdles significantly enhanced our technical and digital design proficiency.

REFLECTION:
Collaborating with my friend Ginnie Lo on this final project provided us with the opportunity to enhance our design skills, delving not only into UX/UI but also exploring the difficulties of card game design.
